Managing Storage Locations
What is a Storage Location and how is it organized?
Storage locations are places where things are kept in the laboratory. These include freezers, refrigerators, benches, chemical shelves, cabinets and store-rooms. When preparing to use LabManager, each of these should be given a logical name. For example "Freezer-2", so that you can mark an antibody as being stored in Freezer-2.
The organization within each area is: Top level, the storage area name; within the sotrage area, the shelf (typically 1,2,3...); on each shelf may be racks (most common in freezers) (typically A,B,C...). In each rack, or simply on each shelf are boxes (freezer boxes with individual labels or numbered 1,2,3...). If you wish to specify the position within the box, perhaps for frozen cell stocks, this may be indicated as well. So a location description for an vial of plasmid may read:
Freezer-2, Shelf-1, Rack-3, Box-11, Position a-5
The storage locations list handles the names and information about each location. The shelf, rack and box are handled as editable popup lists that are the same for each location.
Entering or Editing a Storage Location
From the Management Functions screen, navigate to the "Storage Locations" Screen by pressing the "Storage Locations" button. A list of all storage locations is presented. You may sort the list by name, room number or owner by clicking on these list headings. To edit a location click on "View" to enter a new location click on "Add Location". Either of these will bring you to the individual location screen.
Here you can enter the location name, owner (who is responsible for cleaning and keeping it up, if anyone), type (refrigerator, freezer, bench, etc.), room number, any notes, and a temperature if it is a refridgerator or freezer. You may also browse through other entries using the next and previous buttons. Click on "Done", or "View List" when you are finished.
Enter locations before orders are placed, and this powerful feature to help you locate items in the laboratory.
